Basketball Referee

This is my newest shirt. I just started this week as a basketball referee for the Provo City Recreation Center. I've learned a lot these past few days, mostly about how much I don't know! :) I've learned that NBA referee earnings are in the 6 figures for 6 months of work. I've also learned why, because it's a really tough job. You have to worry about 1001 different things all while running up and down the court with players and fans yelling at you, all with whistle in your mouth.

So this means that I have a lot of studying to do so I can officiate a game with confidence. It's important to me because the hourly pay is really nice. :)

In order to improve how I want to, I decided to become a certified High School Arbiter in the state of Utah. Hopefully the certification will help me learn the rules better and thus be able to officiate games more accurately and more confidently.

  1. I was a rec league ref and it isn't an easy job. That's awesome about you going the extra mile. People will still probably get mad and you'll miss some calls. It sure happened to me. But it is cool that you are trying to be better and even if people don't realize how much work you put in you will feel great about your contribution.

  2. That sounds like a sweet job! Being a referee definitely is tough but it sounds like you've set good goals and have the determination to succeed. Good luck with the reffing and thanks for the post.

  3. I think the hardest part about being a referee would be to keep your eyes on the conduct of the game rather than keeping your eyes as a spectator. I couldn't imagine refereeing the super bowl! Learning that skill is actually something really useful! You'll be able to apply it to several things in life.

  4. I think it is neat that you are taking the extra step to becoming a certified High School Arbiter. As a player I don't hardly think or realize how much work some referee's put into their job. It is important to give credit where credit is due and not just complain. Thanks and good luck!
